The Science of Order Flow Imbalance (OFI)
Price moves when aggressive market orders overwhelm resting limit order liquidity on one side of the order book. By tracking the rate of change in bid depth versus ask depth across consecutive tick updates, Order Flow Imbalance (OFI) provides a leading indicator of short-term price momentum before the next candlestick prints.
Using Anchored VWAP for Institutional Confluence
Institutions measure execution performance against the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP). Anchoring VWAP to key structural events, such as the weekly open, monthly open, or major CPI inflation release candles, identifies the exact average price paid by large market participants since that catalyst.
Practical Order Flow Execution Rules
- Enter long when price pulls back to the Anchored VWAP line and prints positive Order Flow Imbalance on the 5-minute chart.
- Place your stop-loss 1 tick below the lower 1-standard-deviation VWAP band.
- Take partial profits when price reaches the upper 2-standard-deviation VWAP band.
